Now & Then The Musical

SYNOPSIS

The show spans a 43-year relationship of Daniel and Greg and often the stage is shared at the same time by the pairs often experiencing the same moment in time either at the present moment, flashback, or dreamlike sequences.  They are portrayed throughout 3 time periods of the couple in their 20’s, 30’s and 60’s

The original score by Dennis Manning has a blend of music from folk, country, pop, and ballad styles.  The music is played live on stage with 3 acoustic guitars played by “Daniel” the aspiring, then stalled, then forgotten possible Nashville country singer.  His partner, “Greg” is an aspiring, then stalled, then forgotten possible comedian.  All 6 cast members sing at times singular and then in pairs or in parts. Critics have said that the music is heartfelt, lyrical and touching, toe-tapping and familiar, like these are songs you have loved from a time ago.

The music in the play is stunning; acting as one of the best extensions to the spoken dialogue used on the stage. There is an infectious beat to it and where the same song is repeated during various poignant and extremely touching parts of the story, the emotional response from the audience was gorgeous.

The 6-actors each get their time to shine vocally and dramatically, this is an ensemble cast.  The love story is between two men, and as audiences globally have expressed,” Love is Love.”  As the couples kiss it is not meant to be daring, titillating or lustful.  They show poignant expressions of tender affection.  These two lovers, love each other, simple as that!

Now and Then

The plot follows young Daniel, just out of the seminary and now in college where he meets Greg, emcee at the college coffee house.  The story opens with the signature song, “Solitary Man” and the audience and Greg are impressed!  And so, starts the journey and love for these two.  In their 30’s life has not evolved to where either thought that they would be.

Daniel is now a mattress salesman by day and a struggling try-to-get-to-Nashville artist at any point at night.  Greg has set aside the plans for comedian stardom and now works at a bank, “yeah that’s a life riot…checking or savings how can I help you” GREG tells us.  Then we see the pair in their 60’s both have eased up a bit, life has been good.  Maybe not all those crazy dreams got fulfilled but they got through it, together.  The show is not chronological. It is a fluid movement of back-and-forth and present-and-future all at once.
